Choosing a Free Chlorine Analyzer
A chlorine sensor is made to detect how much chlorine is present in a solution.
When chlorine is dissolved in water, it can take on a variety of forms, including hypochlorous acid and chlorite. This is known as free chlorine, and when it is calculated as a percentage of chlorine demand, it produces residual chlorine. According to the Chlorine section, the pH of the measured solution has a significant impact on the ratio of hypochlorous acid to chlorite.

Amperometric
Every amperometric chlorine sensor uses this electrochemical process to measure chlorine.

At the cathode, hypochlorous acid is reduced to chloride, which releases electrons. The sensor measures this electron flux.
There are two main styles: Membrane and Bare
Bare type
The three-electrode amperometric measurement method is employed in bare electrode systems. By adjusting for solution resistance, a potentiostat applies voltage between two electrodes. The measured current and chlorine concentration are inversely related.
Membrane type
The two-electrode approach is employed in a Membrane Style system. The Counter Electrodes and the Reference Electrode are united and kept apart from the solution by a membrane, otherwise it is virtually identical to the three-electrode approach. Electrolyte gradually diffuses into the solution and needs to be frequently replaced.
Colorimetric type
Chemicals applied to the sample react with chlorine in the colorimetric method to produce a colour. The amount of chlorine has a clear relation to how dark the colour is. These tools are referred to as Online DPD Instruments (DPD). A reading of the ppm chlorine is obtained by measuring the colour.
